In fact, analyzation of almost any Griffith opus will show that it is composed for the most part of an appeal to the sensual instincts. He has also developed the tendency of many of the other big directors to exaggerate and over emphasize incidents to get them accross to the spectator.

From an English point of view, BROKEN BLOSSOMS has its defects, but it is a genuine attempt to bring real tragedy on to the screen as apart from machine-made drama, and for that Mr. Griffith deserves the gratitude of all who are convinced of the potentialities of the film.
